April 12-13
Our next planned destination is Great Sand Dunes in Colorado, but we need to make our way north through New Mexico to get there. We’re leaning into the moment more and more. This country is so strangely unique; there’s a lot to appreciate around every turn.

In Roswell, there are aliens Everywhere!
There are communities of folks who have figured out how to make the desert lifestyle stylish and sustainable.
We stopped at a local cafe because we were attracted to the beautiful metal sculpture out front.. The local blacksmith didn’t have enough regular work to keep him busy, so he took up art, and he is amazing. Sorry these photos don’t do him justice. Later in the day, we saw a roadside art market and stopped to collect a few treasures and chat with the artists.
Miles of big sky, big ranches, big mountains.
We stopped for the night in Manzano Mountains State Park, a sweet little place with a shelter on each campsite. We were glad to have it, because it looked like rain. Thunder and dark clouds passed over, but the rain never came. I realized that we haven’t seen rain since the first night of our trip.
WOW!!! Absolutely AMAZING!!! Love the mountains!!! All these postings bring back so many memories of when I was a kid and we drove across the country!!! Can’t thank you enough!!!

U’ll love Sand Dunes NP, it’s Desert of Maine on steroids, we camped there for 3 days, and every day is different as dunes shift in wind, one of fave places in CO, but stop in LaVida on way there on west side of 9000′ mtn pass road, lovely and full of artists & best tacos. Plz don’t miss Rocky MTN NP either or Mt Evans in Evergreen, highest paved drivable road in NA, 14260′–we called it the 0MG! road, Betsy says I cried out OMG! at every switchback. There are no fences, just small boulders–OMG! Half way pub is worth stop. Caramba!
